Robert's Eternal Goldfish at Stomping Ground Comedy Theater October 5 and 12

After touring my one-person show Robert’s Eternal Goldfish around North America the last few months, I am bringing my solo comedy home to Dallas for a limited engagement at the Stomping Ground Comedy Theater, 1350 Manufacturing St #109, Dallas, TX 75207. The show plays Friday, October 5, 2018 at 8 PM and Friday, October 12, 2015 at 8 PM.

The show concerns Mr. Robert J. Roberts, a man brimming with hate for “so many things” in the world. In particular, he really dislikes people. All people. One day he becomes the unlikely custodian of a magical goldfish and Robert’s misanthropic views are seriously challenged. Can a person be frustrated into being a better human being?

Over the last few months, Robert’s Eternal Goldfish was presented at the Minnesota Fringe Festival, the Nanaimo Fringe in British Columbia and the Elgin Fringe Festival in Illinois.

ROBERT’S ETERNAL GOLDFISH plays Fridays, October 5 and October 12, 2018. Both shows at 8:00 PM. At the Stomping Ground Comedy Theater, 1350 Manufacturing St #109, Dallas, TX 75207. Tickets are $10 and available at the door or online at: https://stompinggroundcomedy.org/calendar/roberts-eternal-goldfish-friday-oct-5/

Cultivated Playwright Podcast Episode 12

There’s an old adage that one should not lose sight of the forest for the trees. It basically means one should keep in mind the bigger picture. This certainly true of fringe touring.
I have been traveling around to present my shows – ones I write and perform myself – to “fringe” theatre festivals all over North America in the last several years. I have observed within myself, and in others, how difficult it can be to keep the real reasons one is at the festival in the first place in mind, especially once one is in a new city and in the midst of a big arts festival. A fringe fest can feel overwhelming sometimes.
In this episode I talk about how difficult, but how necessary, it is to keep one’s eye on the prize. Once at a festival, after travel and preparation and all the energy to get the show up on its feet, the impetus is to relax a little. To retreat a bit away from the less fun responsibilities (or opportunities) which are often the real reasons for even coming to that festival. I cover the uncomfortable importance of marketing, of choosing to network and of maintaining a really high production quality among other tips and techniques.

Reviews from ROBERT'S ETERNAL GOLDFISH at the 2018 Elgin Fringe Festival

Performing ROBERT'S ETERNAL GOLDFISH at Elgin Fringe 2018

Audacity Theatre Lab's Robert's Eternal Goldfish

- Jeffrey Pierce, The Elgin Review

Every great piece of theatrical art bears of the stamp of something like divine intervention, in the form of a few words from the script that sum up the piece perfectly. Awash in the torrent of words that is "Robert's Eternal Goldfish" is this phrase: "horribly adorable."

The angry rants and picayune observational humor are just camouflage for a beautifully composed long-form prose poem filled with layered imagery, expressed through vivid descriptions of cafes, apartment life, memories and dreams. This piece would read beautifully on paper.

But Brad McEntire executes it convincingly as a neurotic loner in a hoodie and knit cap, with a musical and emotive delivery that fixes your attention no matter what the hour of night -- or degree of caffeination. Like anger management group therapy, you might be healed just by listening.

One man movie, yes I said a movie not just a show. The storytelling and theatrical presence in this piece go beyond a show. This man is painter of words, from his lips to your ears, he's got you hypnotized in wonder. The detail, imagery, the emotion that is expressed through his storytelling transforms the space and you into it from the chair you perch upon.  A must see and more importantly to HEAR.

Masterful, intense, poignant,  brilliant,  insightful, oh and did I say intense?   By far one of the best storytellers I've ever seen, well delivered and meaningful. I'll be talking about this one for a long time.  This show is likely the best of show Fringe 2018. A must see.

Spirit of Fringe Award at 2018 Elgin Fringe

Me performing Robert's Eternal Goldfish

Hey, it is John Michael

I received this tote bag filled with swag as an award

It was my birthday yesterday. I also performed my last show of Robert's Eternal Goldfish at the 2018 Elgin Fringe Festival. My good friend and fellow solo performer John Michael came in from Chicago to catch the show. Then, at the closing night party last night for the Fringe, I was announced the winner of the the "Spriit of the Fringe" Award ( a sort of Best of Fest prize). So, all around... pretty busy day.

Nice write up in The Elgin Review

This pic was snapped, I think, by the reviewer himself who was in the front row.

Nice first audience review from the Elgin Fringe

Brad McEntire

My solo show Robert's Eternal Goldfish opened last night at 9 pm at the Elgin Fringe Festival. It was a whirlwind day, with less than two hours of sleep the night before (thanks to my 20-month old son and his latest bout with teething).

I taught my 8 am college class, then headed to the airport. Cramped flight (thanks United) to O'Hare. The airline made me check my single small backpack because United doesn't have space for carry-on bags for its passangers. Waited for my bag in O'Hare for over half an hour. Got CTA ticket to ride the El to the Rosemont Station, where I caught a Pace bus to downtown Elgin. Arrived in Elgin about three hours before my show.

Checked in with the fringe, then hiked to my billet. Charming place with friendly cats, but no air-conditioning. Made it back to the venue 40 miuntes before curtain. This was the first time I had seen the space. Luckily the show has no tech. I was sooooo tired, I was basically a zombie. I had about 10-11 audience members. I poured whatever energy I could muster into the show. Went over well. I had a good time and I think the audience dug it.

As I stumbled out of the venue, two people outside stopped me. It was a husband and wife. They had just been in the audience. They said they were experienced fringe-goers who had been to Chicago and Vancouver and a bunch of places and seen a lot of fringe shows.

"But you are one of the best we have ever seen..."

Totally made my whole day.

The guy said he was writing a review on the Elgin Fringe website right then. I thanked them for coming out to the show and headed off to grab a bite and a celbratory beer before crashing.

This morning This review was up on the Elgin Fringe site...
