CHOP returns... At SoloMania! Festival in New Orleans


I am not sure which exact dates and times I'm down for just yet, but I wanted to start to get the word out there about SoloMania! As you'll see in the press release below, it is a mini-fringe fest organized by some kick-ass solo performers in New Orleans. I am thrilled and humbled I was invited to join in (I'm one of just three or four out-of-towners). I mean, look at the list below of the awesome artists in this thing (I mean, Bremner Duthie! That dude is a class act!).

I'm taking my weird, heart-breaking and hilarious solo show CHOP, which I'm totally excited to come back to after more than a year away from it.

SOLOMANIA! FESTIVAL OFFERS A MENU OF SOLO PERFORMANCES

The first two weekends in November, the Shadowbox Theatre will host the SoloMania 
Festival (www.solomaniafest.com). SoloMania! offers New Orleans theater lovers a menu of solo performances, showcasing the diversity of perspectives and solo techniques currently enlivening New Orleans stages. The solo shows reflect a range of sensibilities, including performances for latenight, adult, and child audiences. SoloMania! promotes experimentation and risk among writers, solo performers, and directors. It supports the development and presentation of new one-woman, one-man, one-person shows. SoloMania! will present these performers in back-to-back solo shows in a variety of styles: including comedy, drama, puppetry, cabaret, monologue, storytelling, burlesque, and inter-media. 

Earlier this year, several New Orleans performers got together and agreed to share the 
expense of producing a mini-fest themselves. The line-up includes Bremner Fletcher Duthie
Veronica Russell, Frederick Mead, Harry Mayronne, Diana Shortez, Karen Shields, Jennifer Pagan, Amy Woodruff, Enzo Lombard, Brady McKellar, Claudia Baumgarten, Brad McEntire, and Casey Groves. Collectively, these performers have garnered a dazzling array of awards and international credits. More than performers, they are also writers, directors, musicians, drama teachers, puppeteers, and costume designers.

RASPBERRY FIZZ at 2013 Houston Fringe


I am pleased to announce that my little one-act RASPBERRY FIZZ will be at the 2013 Houston Fringe Festival next month. 

RASPBERRY FIZZ is an exploration of expectations and the potentialities of the future tied up in a weird, tender and humorous coming-of-age encounter between two adolescents in 1949 small town America. 

The play was last seen in Addison, Texas in March of 2012 at the Water Tower Theatre's Out of the Loop Fringe Festival. That was a well-reviewed production directed by Andy Baldwin and featured an kick-ass cast that included Shane Beeson, Natalie Young and Jeff Swearingen. I'm thrilled to take this charming little play on the road. 

I am pleased to team up with two of the cats who worked on CARTER STUBBS TAKES FLIGHT in Denton last spring. RASPBERRY FIZZ will feature Travis Stuebing as Ellson, Tashina Richardson as Samantha and me as the Barker. Directed by me, Brad McEntire.

Or maybe triple or quadruple. On Sept. 1, Brad McEntire will attempt six hours of solo improvisation at the Margo Jones Theatre. No, he's not crazy.

Dallas — An ungodly amount of nonstop improvisation has been done before in North Texas, and although Brad McEntire isn't attempting to break any records (except his own) or a feat like his pal Jeff Swearingen managed two years ago ( * ), McEntire is nonetheless gonna go for the long-haul. 

He's attempting six-plus hours of solo improv on Sunday, Sept. 1 at the Margo Jones Theatre in the Magnolia Lounge. It's called Dribble Funk 380, begins at 5 p.m., and the ticket is a suggested donation of $10. You can come and go as you please, and there will be two breaks, at the two and four hour marks. 

But you're encouraged to go for the marathon. It's not like you haven't sat through almost-as-long and much less interesting performances before.

Epilogue - What I learned...

So, I accomplished what I originally set out to do. I unfolded a completely spontaneous, created-on-the-spot story involving dozens of characters over 380 minutes (or nearly 6 1/2 hours). I am extremely proud of the resulting performance. As expected there were some lame parts, but there were also some really golden moments.

It is an accomplishment that must sink in when I tell people about it. It doesn't sound that impressive or unique until the person I'm talking to really considers it. No script, no prep, no help. A single epic narrative is spun out over nearly six and half hours by a single performer... completely making it up as he goes along! To my knowledge no other solo improviser has ever attempted anything quite like it. 

The performance yielded many lessons and observations for me, nestled as I was in the eye of the storm.

1. A Sunday afternoon at the end of the summer on a Holiday weekend is a difficult time to get audience members out to see anything, let alone a long-ass solo improv. I had at most 9 people in the audience at one point and as little as three at another. The audience was allowed to come and go as they pleased and partake of the peanut butter and jelly sandwich bar in the lobby. Still, I would have liked to have had more audience members. One guy, who left and came back commented after the show that it was too bad more people didn't come out to see it. I agree. It was also my own damn fault. Since I was so nervous about the whole thing, I pretty much dragged my feet the first two weeks after announcing it (leaving myself an out). Better marketing could have yielded better numbers in the audience.

2. I am out of shape. I stayed in constant movement and did a lot of running between characters on the stage and by the end I felt like I had been in an intense workout. I got winded once, after the first 10 minute break (at the 2 hour mark). It didn't last long, but I couldn't seem to catch my breath on stage for a bit. Kinda scary. Today, my legs burn!

3. My voice held out, but today, the day after, I am nearly hoarse. I created a few rather loud, abrasive characters. Only one with a gravelly voice. I was proud of my vocal range with the characters, actually, even more so that the physical characterizations.

4. The beginning was really difficult and clumbersome (exposition, man) and the ending was also difficult (I had a natural end point about 30 minutes before the time was up, so had to kind of Lord of the Rings out a few more endings). The middle couple of hours were the most fun. I caught a second wind and my energy level spiked. I switched in the middle at some point from doing a lot of character interaction work to telling long rambling character monologues. The monologues were much funnier and more dynamic than the character interactions, though they did not necessarily drive the story forward as much. I would not have found this out if I hadn't had to push through the barrier of my normal limits. After I pushed past my breaking point (about an hour and half), I was in completely new territory. The Dribble Funk passed from scary to really fun and exciting. 

5. I stumbled onto a narrative structure that saved my ass and did it completely by accident. Once the main objective of the main character was put into play, I kept setting up one dilemma after another, which actually pushed the protagonist further from solving his main problem. This sort of nesting doll structure allowed me to spin the single yarn out over hours.

6. I have good friends. A lot of my close friends came and sat in to watch for a bit. There were also several people I didn't know. Local solo performer John Michael brought me a "birthday" pizza. Fellow Audacity artist Jeff Hernandez came and tweeted updates. My improv cohort Jeff Swearingen caught the final half hour. My wife and chief supporter Ruth manned the lobby while Matt Tomlanovich manned the booth. He also posted a lot of updates on FB. Without support like this, I am sure I would not have been able to pull off something like DF380. I am a lucky guy.

A few hours ago, I finished performing 380 minutes (six hours and 20 minutes total) of solo improvisation. It was awesome and exciting and nerve-wracking and exhausting. It happened. 

I pit myself against myself, against the void, against the stage and I came out the other side. I constructed a nesting doll of narrative that ranged from another solar system to Kansas corn fields to secret military complexes to NYC's Broadway to the fictional/satirical "Necropolis, the City of the Dead." Dozens of characters sprang forth. By the end, with only five people left in the audience, I was brain drained and woozy, but still on my feet. It happened.

I created 380 minutes of spontaneous theatre.

In a day or so, I'll wrangle all the Twitter and FB feeds and construct a play-by-play. But for now, I sleep. I will sleep the slumber of Odysseus and other wanderers in the realms of the impossible.
